3 days in Vienna

Klimt, coffeehouses and wine taverns in three unhurried Viennese days

Three days that balance Vienna's imperial grandeur with its everyday rituals: Habsburg palaces and world-class galleries in the mornings, long coffeehouse breaks and market grazing in the afternoons, and opera, wine taverns or schnitzel by night. Each day stays in one part of the city, so you spend your time looking at Klimt and Bruegel, not riding trams.

Weather

Vienna has warm summers (24-30C, occasional thunderstorms), crisp, often grey winters around 0-5C with festive Christmas markets, and mild, pleasant shoulder seasons. The best time is late April to early June or September to October, when it is 15-22C, the vineyards and terraces are open and the crowds are thinner.

Arriving

From Vienna International Airport (VIE), the City Airport Train (CAT) reaches Wien Mitte in 16 minutes for about 14.90 EUR one way. The S7 S-Bahn covers the same route in about 25 minutes for 4.40 EUR (a city ticket plus the airport zone supplement), and the ÖBB Railjet to Hauptbahnhof takes 15 minutes for a similar fare. A taxi or Uber to the centre takes 25-35 minutes and costs roughly 40-55 EUR. Arriving by train, Wien Hauptbahnhof is linked to the centre by U1 in 5 minutes.

Money & power

Euro (EUR). Plugs: Type C and F (230V, 50Hz); bring a European two-pin adapter if coming from the UK, US or Asia.

Day by day

Your itinerary

Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

  1. Day1

    Ringstrasse Splendour and Old Town

Innere Stadt (1st district), Hofburg, Opera

    1. Morning

St. Stephen's Cathedral and the South Tower climb

Start at Stephansdom while it is quiet, then climb the 343 steps of the South Tower for a view over the patterned tile roof and the city. The North Tower lift is the easier option, and arriving before 10am avoids tour groups on a jet-lagged first day.

      Stephansplatz, Innere Stadt~€7 pp
    2. Afternoon

Hofburg: Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum and Silver Collection

Walk down Graben and Kohlmarkt, stopping at Demel for a slice of cake, to reach the Hofburg. Its combined ticket covers Franz Joseph's apartments, the Sisi Museum and the dazzling imperial tableware, a good two-hour overview of Habsburg life. Afterwards, stroll through the Burggarten past the Palmenhaus.

      Hofburg, Michaelerplatz~€19 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Vienna State Opera standing places or performance

Standing-room tickets at the Staatsoper go on sale online from 10am on the day of the performance for 13-18 EUR, an unbeatable way to see world-class opera. If you prefer a seat, book through wiener-staatsoper.at weeks ahead. Dine late on Viennese classics nearby.

      Wiener Staatsoper, Opernring~€18 pp
  2. Day2

    Klimt, Bruegel and the Naschmarkt

MuseumsQuartier, Naschmarkt, Belvedere (4th and 3rd districts)

    1. Morning

      Kunsthistorisches Museum masterpieces

The KHM holds the world's largest Bruegel collection, plus Vermeer, Velazquez and Caravaggio beneath an extraordinary gilded interior. Go at opening (10am), head to the Bruegel room first, and take a coffee break in the domed café. Note that it is closed on Mondays from September to May.

      Maria-Theresien-Platz~€21 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

Naschmarkt lunch, then Klimt's The Kiss at the Upper Belvedere

Walk 10 minutes to the Naschmarkt to graze on falafel, cheese and Austrian wine, and pass the gold-leaf Secession building on the way. Then take tram D to the Upper Belvedere for Klimt's The Kiss and Schiele's portraits in a baroque palace. A timed ticket for late afternoon means smaller crowds.

Naschmarkt and Belvedere, Prinz-Eugen-Strasse~€20 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Concert at the Musikverein or Konzerthaus

Hear the Vienna Philharmonic or a top touring orchestra in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, whose acoustics are famous worldwide. Book on the official sites rather than from the costumed Mozart sellers on the street. Mid-range seats run 40-90 EUR.

      Musikverein, Karlsplatz~€60 pp
  3. Day3

    Schönbrunn Gardens and Heuriger Wine

Schönbrunn (13th district), Grinzing (19th district)

    1. Morning

      Schönbrunn Palace Grand Tour

Book the 8:30am or 9am timed slot for the 40-room Grand Tour before tour buses arrive. Then climb through the gardens to the Gloriette for a panoramic view, and have coffee and apple strudel at Café Gloriette.

Schönbrunn Palace, Hietzing~€27 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

Café Sperl and a Leopold Museum detour

Head back to the centre for a lingering Melange at Café Sperl, an unchanged 1880 coffeehouse with billiard tables. If you have energy for more art, visit the Leopold Museum in the MuseumsQuartier for the world's largest Schiele collection, or simply relax before your departure.

      Gumpendorfer Strasse and MuseumsQuartier~€20 pp
    3. Evening

      Heuriger evening in the vineyards

Ride tram 38 or bus 38A out to Grinzing or Nussdorf for a traditional Heuriger, a wine tavern serving the owner's own wine. Order a Gemischter Satz and the buffet of roasts and spreads. Look for the pine branch over the door, which means it is open.

      Grinzing / Nussdorf~€35 pp

Austria eSIM

5 GB comfortably covers three days of maps, the WienMobil app, museum ticket QR codes and photo sharing; an eSIM avoids high roaming fees for non-EU visitors and saves hunting for unreliable public Wi-Fi.

  • ✓ Recommended: ~5 GB for 3 days
  • ✓ Install before you fly, activate on landing
  • ✓ Keep your number for WhatsApp & 2FA

Travel insurance

Austria has excellent but expensive private healthcare for non-EU visitors, so medical cover matters; EU travellers should still carry their EHIC. Insurance also protects against pickpocketing in busy tourist hubs, non-refundable concert and opera tickets if you fall ill, and flight disruption, which is common with winter weather and summer strikes across European hubs.

  • ✓ Emergency medical & evacuation
  • ✓ Trip interruption, delays & lost luggage

Smart saving

Take the ÖBB Railjet or S7 from the airport (around 4-5 EUR with a city zone ticket) instead of the City Airport Train (about 15 EUR each way), and eat your main meal at lunch, when many Beisln offer a Mittagsmenü for 11-15 EUR.

Good to know

Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Local know-how

Practical tips

transport

Buy the 72-hour pass

A 72-hour Wiener Linien ticket covers all U-Bahn, trams and buses inside the city; buy it in the WienMobil app or at station machines and validate it once before first use. Trams 1 and 2 circle the Ringstrasse and are a cheap sightseeing ride.

booking

Book big sights and concerts ahead

Reserve timed Schönbrunn tickets and Spanish Riding School performances a week or more ahead, especially in summer and December. For the State Opera, standing-room tickets (from about 15 EUR) go on sale online the morning of the performance.

culture

Check Monday closures

The Kunsthistorisches Museum and several smaller museums close on Mondays outside summer, while the Albertina and Upper Belvedere open daily, so plan art days accordingly. Most shops close on Sundays.

money

Tipping and cash

Round up or add about 5-10% and tell the waiter the total when you pay rather than leaving coins on the table. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for Würstelstände, Heurigen and market stalls.

safety

Ignore the costumed Mozart sellers

Men in powdered wigs around Stephansplatz and the Opera sell overpriced concerts of uneven quality; buy directly from venues like the Musikverein, Konzerthaus or Karlskirche instead. Watch for pickpockets in crowded U-Bahn stations such as Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz.

culture

Coffee-house etiquette

In classic cafes like Café Sperl or Café Hawelka you wait to be seated or pick a free table, and you can linger for hours over one Melange. Water arrives free with coffee; tap water everywhere in Vienna is excellent alpine spring water.

weather

Best seasons

April to June and September to October bring mild 15-24 C days ideal for walking; July and August can hit 30 C with many locals away, while winter hovers around 0 C but brings magical Christmas markets from mid-November.

connectivity

Free Wi-Fi is patchy

Some squares and cafes offer free Wi-Fi, but it is unreliable on the move, so rely on mobile data for the WienMobil app and Google Maps.

Pack this

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for cobblestones and long museum days
  • One smart-casual outfit for a concert, opera or upscale dinner
  • Light layers and a compact umbrella, as weather changes quickly in spring and autumn
  • European two-pin plug adapter (Type C/F)
  • Refillable water bottle to fill from Vienna's free drinking fountains
  • Foldable tote bag for Naschmarkt shopping, since shops charge for bags
  • Warm coat, hat and gloves if visiting November to February for the Christmas markets

Say it like a local

Grüß Gott
Hello (the standard Austrian greeting)
Danke schön
Thank you very much
Zahlen, bitte
The bill, please
Eine Melange, bitte
A Viennese milky coffee, please
