3 days in Amsterdam

Golden Age masters, canal-side apple pie and candlelit Dutch dinners

Three unhurried days that move neighbourhood by neighbourhood: the canal ring and Jordaan first, the great museums of Museumplein with a De Pijp food detour second, and Rembrandt's old quarter plus a ferry hop to creative Amsterdam Noord to finish. It is built for two people who want world-class art in the mornings, good food at every turn and atmospheric canal evenings without rushing.

Weather

Amsterdam has a mild, changeable maritime climate: summers run around 18-23°C, winters 2-7°C, and a light shower can arrive in any month, so pack a compact umbrella and layers. The best time to visit is late April to June for tulips, long evenings and fewer storms, or September for warm days and thinner crowds.

Arriving

From Schiphol Airport, direct NS trains run to Amsterdam Centraal every few minutes, take about 15-17 minutes and cost roughly 6-7 EUR per person; you can simply tap in and out with a contactless bank card. For Museumplein or Leidseplein hotels, bus 397 (Amsterdam Airport Express) takes around 30 minutes for about 7 EUR. A taxi to the centre costs around 50-60 EUR and takes 25-35 minutes depending on traffic.

Money & power

Day by day

Your itinerary

Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

  1. Day1

    Canals, courtyards and the Jordaan

    Grachtengordel, De 9 Straatjes, Jordaan

    1. Morning

Begijnhof and the Nine Streets stroll

Ease off the flight with a gentle walk starting at the hidden Begijnhof courtyard off Spui, home to one of the city's oldest wooden houses. Then wander west through De 9 Straatjes, the boutique-lined lanes between Herengracht and Prinsengracht, for independent shops and classic canal views. It is flat, walkable and perfect for shaking off jet lag.

Begijnhof (Spui) to De 9 StraatjesFree
    2. Afternoon

      Anne Frank House

Walk the secret annex on Prinsengracht where Anne Frank wrote her diary, a quietly powerful visit of around an hour. Tickets are sold only on the official annefrank.org website, released six weeks ahead, and afternoon slots disappear quickly, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Afterwards, climb the Westerkerk tower next door in season for rooftop views.

      Prinsengracht 263, Jordaan~€16 pp
    3. Evening

Evening canal cruise through the ring

See the UNESCO-listed canals as the bridges light up, ideally on a small open boat rather than a large glass-roofed barge. Choose a departure close to sunset for the best light, then finish with a drink at the classic brown café Café 't Smalle on Egelantiersgracht.

  2. Day2

    Masterpieces and a rijsttafel feast

    Museumplein, De Pijp, Vondelpark

    1. Morning

      Rijksmuseum and the Night Watch

Arrive for the 9am opening and head straight to the Gallery of Honour for Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's The Milkmaid before the tour groups arrive. Allow at least three hours; the Delftware, dollhouses and the restored Cuypers library are worth the detour. Timed tickets are essential in peak months.

      Rijksmuseum, Museumplein~€25 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

Van Gogh Museum, then Albert Cuyp Market

After lunch, use your timed slot at the Van Gogh Museum for Sunflowers, The Bedroom and the world's largest collection of his letters and paintings. Then walk 15 minutes into De Pijp for the Albert Cuyp Market (Monday to Saturday) to graze on herring, cheese and fresh stroopwafels.

Museumplein and Albert Cuypstraat, De Pijp~€22 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

      Vondelpark sunset and Indonesian rijsttafel

Stroll through Vondelpark as the light softens, then sit down to a rijsttafel, the many-dish Indonesian feast that is Amsterdam's signature colonial-era legacy. Restaurant Blauw on Amstelveenseweg does one of the city's best versions; reserve a few days ahead.

Vondelpark to Restaurant Blauw, Amstelveenseweg 158~€55 pp
  3. Day3

    Rembrandt's quarter and creative Noord

    Nieuwmarkt, Waterlooplein, Amsterdam Noord

    1. Morning

      Rembrandt House Museum

Step inside the townhouse where Rembrandt lived and painted for nearly 20 years, with his studio, cabinet of curiosities and live etching demonstrations. Go at opening time, then browse the Waterlooplein flea market next door and walk through Nieuwmarkt past the medieval Waag weigh house.

Jodenbreestraat 4, Waterlooplein~€20 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

      Free ferry to A'DAM Lookout

Take the free GVB ferry from behind Centraal Station across the IJ, a five-minute ride with great harbour views. Ride up the A'DAM Tower for a 360-degree panorama, and if you are brave, try the Over the Edge swing hanging off the roof. Then wander next door to the EYE Film Museum's dramatic white building.

A'DAM Tower and EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam Noord~€17 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Genever tasting and farewell Dutch dinner

Back across the water, slip down the alley behind Dam Square to Wynand Fockink, a tasting room pouring genever and liqueurs since 1679; tradition says you take the first sip bent over without lifting the glass. Finish with a modern take on old Dutch recipes at Restaurant Greetje on Peperstraat, booked in advance.

      Pijlsteeg (Dam) and Peperstraat~€75 pp

Planning several sights?

Save with a Amsterdam city pass

One Go City pass covers many of Amsterdam's top attractions and tours. If you're visiting three or more paid sights, it often costs less than buying tickets one by one.

Travel essentials

Netherlands eSIM

5GB comfortably covers three days of maps, tram planning with 9292 or the GVB app, museum e-tickets and photo sharing. Visitors from outside the EU can avoid costly roaming, and the eSIM works the moment you land at Schiphol.

  • ✓ Recommended: ~5 GB for 3 days
  • ✓ Install before you fly, activate on landing
  • ✓ Keep your number for WhatsApp & 2FA

Travel insurance

Bike-related accidents and slips on wet cobbles are common among visitors, and non-EU travellers can face steep private medical bills. Pickpocketing around Centraal, Damrak and busy trams is a real risk to phones and wallets. Schiphol also sees frequent delays and cancellations in peak summer and stormy weather, so cover for disruption and non-refundable museum or tour tickets is worthwhile.

  • ✓ Emergency medical & evacuation
  • ✓ Trip interruption, delays & lost luggage

Smart saving

Stay in Oud-West or the Museum Quarter rather than on the canals, and avoid Friday and Saturday nights. This can cut hotel costs by EUR 50-80 a night, the single biggest item in an Amsterdam budget.

Good to know

Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Local know-how

Practical tips

booking

Book museum slots weeks ahead

Anne Frank House tickets are sold online only and are released six weeks ahead, usually on Tuesdays. They sell out fast, so set a reminder. Book the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum timed slots at least a week ahead too.

transport

Tap in with your bank card

Trams, metro and trains accept contactless bank cards via OVpay, so remember to tap in and out. If you plan several rides a day, a GVB 72-hour pass is better value. The Sprinter or Intercity train from Schiphol to Centraal takes about 15 minutes.

safety

Respect the bike lanes

The red-paved lanes belong to cyclists, who move fast and won't stop. Look both ways before stepping off any kerb. Keep phones and wallets secure around Centraal Station, Damrak and the Red Light District, where pickpockets are common.

money

Cards rule, cash is rare

Many cafés, museums and shops are card-only, so cash is rarely needed. Some smaller places only accept Maestro or V Pay debit cards, so carry a Visa or Mastercard backup.

culture

Tipping and table manners

Service is included, but rounding up or leaving 5-10% for good table service is appreciated. Dinner reservations are wise from Thursday to Saturday, and kitchens often close by 22:00.

weather

Best season and typical weather

Late April to early June and September bring mild 14-20C days, tulips in spring and fewer crowds in autumn. Summer is warmest at around 22C but busiest. Winter is grey and 3-7C. Showers can arrive any month.

safety

Avoid street-dealer and coffeeshop pitfalls

Never buy anything from people offering drugs on the street, as it is illegal and often fake or dangerous. Drinking alcohol in public is banned in parts of the centre, with fines enforced.

connectivity

Free Wi-Fi is everywhere, but patchy

Most hotels, cafés and museums have free Wi-Fi. Mobile data is still handy for tram times, the 9292 journey planner and navigating the canal grid, which looks confusingly similar.

Pack this

  • Compact umbrella and a light waterproof jacket for sudden showers
  • Comfortable, grippy walking shoes for cobbles and wet bridges
  • Warm layer or scarf for windy canal-side evenings, even in summer
  • Contactless Visa or Mastercard (and a backup card)
  • Small crossbody bag with a zip for crowded tram and market areas
  • Reusable tote bag for cheese, stroopwafels and market buys
  • EU two-pin plug adapter if coming from the UK, US or elsewhere
