Where to stay in Vienna
Innere Stadt for first-timers, Neubau for style, Leopoldstadt for value, Wieden for food lovers
Vienna radiates out from the compact old town, the Innere Stadt, ringed by the Ringstrasse boulevard, with the numbered districts fanning out beyond it. Almost everything a visitor wants lies within or just outside the Ring, and the U-Bahn is so efficient that any base near a U1, U2, U3 or U4 station works well. Choose based on whether you want imperial grandeur on your doorstep or a more lived-in neighbourhood with cafes and better value.

Book two to three months ahead for December, when the Christmas markets fill hotels, and for the ball season in January and February and New Year's Eve concerts. Big congresses and events like the Vienna City Marathon in April also spike prices, while late January outside ball weekends and November are the best value.
Getting around
The old town is best explored on foot, and a 72-hour Wiener Linien ticket covers U-Bahn, trams and buses everywhere else. From the airport, the CAT train reaches Wien Mitte in 16 minutes, while the cheaper S7 or Railjet trains also serve Wien Mitte and the Hauptbahnhof.
Areas to think twice about
The area around Westbahnhof and the outer stretches of Favoriten near the Hauptbahnhof look central on a map but feel bland and transit-heavy, and the blocks around Praterstern can be uncomfortable late at night. Hotels in Donaustadt near the UN offices are cheaper but leave you a long U-Bahn ride from the sights.
