Best time to visit Vienna
Late April to June, September to October, and December for markets
Vienna is at its best in late spring and early autumn, when parks bloom or turn golden, terraces fill and the concert season is in full swing. Summer brings heat, thunderstorms and the State Opera's annual break, though open-air events make up for it. Winter is grey and cold, but December's Christmas markets and the January-February ball season give it real magic, and outside the holidays it is the cheapest time to go.

Timing tips for Vienna
- Book hotels three to four months ahead for September, October and December weekends, when conferences and Christmas markets fill the city and prices spike.
- The State Opera, Burgtheater and Vienna Boys' Choir Sunday Masses pause in July and August, so time your trip outside summer if performances are the priority.
- On hot summer days, see palaces and museums in the morning, then cool off at Alte Donau or on the Danube Island before an evening at the Rathausplatz film festival.
