3 days in Dubai
Dunes, souks and skyline feasts in three high-octane Dubai days
Three days that swing from old Dubai's spice and gold souks to dune bashing in the desert and the glossy malls and beach clubs of the new city. Each day is grouped by area to cut down on taxi time, with plenty of room for street food, Emirati dishes and a standout dinner. It suits a couple who want adrenaline, serious shopping and great eating in equal measure.
Dubai is hot and dry year-round. November to March is the best season, with highs of 24-30C and pleasant evenings, while June to September regularly tops 40C with heavy humidity, so plan outdoor activities for early morning or after sunset in summer.
Arriving
Dubai International (DXB) is about 15-25 minutes from Downtown and Deira. The Red Line Metro runs from Terminals 1 and 3 to Downtown in about 30 minutes for roughly $2-3 per person with a Nol card. A taxi or Careem/Uber to Downtown costs about $20-30, and around $35-45 to Dubai Marina. If you land at Al Maktoum (DWC), expect a 45-60 minute taxi ride at about $55-75.
Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

Morning
Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and Dubai Museum area
Ease into the jet lag by wandering the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi, stopping at the Coffee Museum and the galleries in the restored courtyard houses. Arrive by 10am, before the midday heat, and duck into Arabian Tea House for a karak tea under the trees.
Al Fahidi, Bur Dubai~$5 pp
Afternoon
Abra across the Creek to the Spice and Gold Souks
Take a traditional abra from Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira for about 1 dirham, then work through the Spice Souk for saffron, sumac and dried limes before hitting the Gold Souk. Haggling is expected; start at around 50-60 percent of the first price for spices and textiles, though gold is priced by weight plus a negotiable making charge.
Deira Spice Souk and Gold Souk~$1 pp
Evening
Guided old Dubai street food walk
Join a small-group food tour through Deira and Bur Dubai tasting Emirati luqaimat, Iranian kebabs, Palestinian knafeh and Indian chaat in family-run spots you would never find alone. Tours start around 5-6pm and are the best way to understand the city's immigrant food culture.

Morning
Early climb of the Burj Khalifa
Book the first At the Top slot of the day (around 8:30-9am) for the clearest views and the shortest queues on levels 124 and 125. Afterwards, stroll the boardwalk around Burj Lake while it is still cool.
Spend a few hours in Dubai Mall: Fashion Avenue for luxury, the Souk area for oud perfumes, and Bateel for premium dates to take home. The free view of the aquarium tank from the ground floor is impressive, and you should rest at the hotel by 2:30pm before pickup.

Evening
Red dune bashing, sandboarding and camp dinner
A 4x4 picks you up around 3pm for dune bashing in the red sands near Lahbab, followed by sandboarding, camel rides and a sunset stop. The night ends with a barbecue dinner and shows at a desert camp, returning around 9pm. Choose an operator with smaller groups and an optional quad bike add-on.
Adventure-seekers can tandem skydive at Skydive Dubai's Palm drop zone, but it costs around $600 and needs booking weeks ahead. For a more affordable thrill, a 30-minute jet ski ride past Burj Al Arab and the Marina skyline gives you great photos for a fraction of the price. Go early, when the water is calmest.
Grab a sunbed on the free public beach at JBR, then browse The Beach and The Walk for outdoor shopping and smoothies. If you still have shopping energy, Mall of the Emirates is a 15-minute taxi away, with Ski Dubai visible through the glass.

Evening
Sunset at The View at The Palm then dinner
Head up to The View at The Palm on level 52 of The Palm Tower around sunset to see the whole frond-shaped island light up. Afterwards, take a taxi to dinner on the Marina or along the Palm's West Beach.
Stylish, relaxed design hotel a short walk or free shuttle from Dubai Mall, so you can shop by day and drop bags before dinner. The lively lobby and pool deck suit a couple who want buzz without luxury prices.

Take a relaxed buffet dinner cruise on a traditional dhow through the glittering Marina towers, an easy alternative to a restaurant on your final night.
One Go City pass covers many of Dubai's top attractions and tours. If you're visiting three or more paid sights, it often costs less than buying tickets one by one.
Roaming in the UAE is expensive, and you will lean on data for Careem, Google Maps, metro planning and booking QR tickets. Note that WhatsApp and FaceTime voice calls are restricted locally, so messages work but plan to use permitted apps or regular calls.
Private healthcare in Dubai is excellent but costly for visitors, and dune bashing, quad biking, zip-lining and skydiving carry real injury risk, so confirm your policy covers adventure activities. DXB is a huge hub where delays and missed connections happen, and cover for high-value shopping purchases is worth checking too.

Smart saving
Book the Burj Khalifa and desert safari as early non-peak slots online (or a combo deal), and use the metro instead of taxis between Downtown and the Marina; together this easily saves $100-150.
Good to know
Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Practical tips
weather
Go between November and March
Winter brings sunny 24-28C days and pleasant evenings, ideal for desert and beach. From June to September it hits 40-45C with high humidity, so outdoor activities shrink to early mornings and evenings.
transport
Buy a Silver Nol card on arrival
Pick one up at any metro station for about AED 25 including credit; it covers the metro, tram and buses. Avoid the pink-signed women-and-children cabins and the Gold Class carriage unless you hold the right ticket, as fines are enforced.
transport
Use Careem or Uber, and the abra
Ride-hailing and official taxis are metered and safe. To cross the creek to the Gold and Spice Souks, take a traditional abra for AED 1 per person instead of driving.
money
Haggle in souks, claim your VAT back
Start around half the asking price in the Gold, Spice and Textile Souks. In malls, ask for a tax-free form on purchases over AED 250 and claim the 5 percent VAT refund at the Planet kiosk at the airport before check-in.
culture
Dress and behave modestly in public
Cover shoulders and knees in malls, souks and mosques; swimwear is fine at beaches and pools only. Public displays of affection beyond hand-holding are frowned upon, and during Ramadan avoid eating or drinking in public by day.
booking
Reserve sunset slots and safaris early
Burj Khalifa sunset tickets and well-rated desert safaris sell out days ahead in high season. Book Friday brunches and popular restaurants at least a few days in advance.
safety
Choose a licensed safari operator
Dune bashing is rough, so pick an operator with recent reviews, proper seatbelts and experienced drivers. Skip it if you have back problems or are pregnant and opt for a camel-trek or sandboarding-only tour.
culture
Tipping norms
Many restaurant bills include a service charge; if not, leave 10-15 percent. Round up taxi fares and give AED 5-10 to porters and safari drivers.
Pack this
High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brim hat
A light cardigan or scarf for freezing mall and metro air-con
Modest outfits covering shoulders and knees for souks and the Jumeirah Mosque
Closed shoes or sturdy sandals for dune walking and sandboarding
A lightweight scarf or buff to keep sand out of your face on safari
Type G plug adapter
Refillable insulated water bottle
