Where to stay in Dubai

Downtown for first-timers, Dubai Marina for beach and nightlife, Bur Dubai for value and old-city character

Dubai stretches about 50 km along the coast, so choosing a base is really about deciding which cluster of sights you want on your doorstep. Old Dubai sits around the Creek in the north, Downtown and the Burj Khalifa are in the middle, and the beach resorts, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina run south-west. Stay near a Metro station or the beach you actually want, because walking between areas is rarely practical, especially in summer heat.

  4. 4. Jumeirah

  5. 5. Bur Dubai

Hotel prices in Dubai

Typical double room per night in high season.

Budget
$110
Mid-range
$260
Luxury
$750

Peak season runs November to March, when prices can double; book two to three months ahead, especially for Christmas, New Year's Eve fireworks, Dubai Shopping Festival and big events like the Dubai Airshow or GITEX. June to August is scorchingly hot but brings deep discounts at luxury resorts.

Getting around

The Metro Red Line runs from the airport through Bur Dubai, Downtown and the Marina, so a hotel within a short walk of a station saves a lot on taxis. Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah beach hotels are taxi-dependent, but Careem and metered taxis are cheap and plentiful.

Areas to think twice about

Al Barsha and Deira's Al Rigga and Naif streets look central and cheap, but Barsha is a car-dependent sprawl of malls and highways, and parts of Deira feel tired and hectic for a holiday base. Dubai South and Jebel Ali hotels near Expo City are bargains for a reason: they are 40 to 60 minutes from almost everything.
