3 days in Berlin

Cold War echoes, world-class art and clubs that never close

Three geographically tight days take you from the government quarter and Nazi-era memorials, through the Berlin Wall and Museum Island, to the street art and club culture of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. The pacing gives two curious, night-owl travellers serious history by day, strong art in between and progressively later nights, building to a proper Berlin club night on the last evening.

Weather

Berlin winters are grey and cold (around -1 to 4°C, short days), while summers are warm and long-lit (20-26°C, with occasional thunderstorms); spring and autumn hover around 10-18°C. The best season is May to September, when beer gardens, open-air clubs and Spree-side bars are in full swing.

Arriving

From BER Airport, take the FEX Airport Express or RE8/RB23 regional train to Hauptbahnhof or Friedrichstraße in about 30-35 minutes, or the S9/S45 S-Bahn (around 45 minutes); you need an ABC zone ticket, roughly 4.70 EUR per person, and a 72-hour ABC ticket (about 38 EUR) is better value if you will ride a lot. A taxi or Uber to Mitte takes 35-50 minutes and costs roughly 55-75 EUR.

Day by day

Your itinerary

Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

  1. Day1

    Power, Memory and the Reichstag

Mitte – Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten edge, Kreuzberg border

    1. Morning

Third Reich and Divided City walking tour

Ease off the flight with a guided walk past Brandenburg Gate, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the car park above Hitler's bunker site. A good guide stitches together sites that otherwise look like ordinary streets, giving you the context for the rest of the trip. Tours start around 10 or 11am near Brandenburg Gate.

Pariser Platz, Mitte~€20 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

Topography of Terror and Checkpoint Charlie

The free Topography of Terror documentation centre stands on the former Gestapo and SS headquarters, with one of the longest surviving outdoor stretches of the Wall along Niederkirchnerstraße. Allow 90 minutes inside, then walk five minutes to Checkpoint Charlie; skip the costumed soldier photo-op and read the open-air panels along Friedrichstraße instead.

      Niederkirchnerstraße 8, KreuzbergFree
    3. Evening

      Sunset in the Reichstag dome

Climb the spiralling glass dome of the Bundestag for free views over Tiergarten and the government quarter as the light drops. Registration on the Bundestag website is mandatory and slots fill days ahead, so book as soon as your dates are fixed and bring passports.

      Reichstag Building, Platz der RepublikFree
  2. Day2

    The Wall, Bunkers and Masterpieces

Gesundbrunnen, Bernauer Straße, Museum Island, Mitte (Scheunenviertel)

    1. Morning

Berlin Wall Memorial and underground bunker tour

Start at 9am at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße, where the preserved death strip and the viewing tower opposite the Documentation Centre show exactly how the border worked. Then ride two stops to Gesundbrunnen for a Berliner Unterwelten tour through a WWII air-raid bunker; English tours are limited and often sell out.

Bernauer Straße and Gesundbrunnen~€20 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

      Nefertiti at the Neues Museum

David Chipperfield's restored Neues Museum is as much an artwork as the bust of Nefertiti it holds, with war damage deliberately left visible on the walls. Book a timed slot, then stroll the colonnades and pop into the Alte Nationalgalerie next door for Caspar David Friedrich if you still have energy. Note most Museum Island houses close on Mondays and the Pergamonmuseum's main halls are shut for renovation.

Museum Island, Mitte~€14 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Cocktails and dancing in the Scheunenviertel

Walk north into the galleries and courtyards around Auguststraße and the Hackesche Höfe, then have a drink at Buck and Breck, a tiny buzzer-entry cocktail bar on Brunnenstraße. Finish with a dance under the chandeliers at Clärchens Ballhaus, a 1913 ballroom that still hosts swing and tango nights.

      Auguststraße and Brunnenstraße, Mitte~€35 pp
  3. Day3

    Street Art to Sunrise Techno

    Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg

    1. Morning

East Side Gallery at opening light

Walk the 1.3 km of painted Wall along Mühlenstraße before the tour groups arrive around 10am, including Dmitri Vrubel's famous Brezhnev-Honecker kiss. Cross the red-brick Oberbaum Bridge on foot afterwards for the classic view of the U-Bahn rattling over the Spree.

      Mühlenstraße, FriedrichshainFree
    2. Afternoon

      Alternative Berlin street art tour

A local-led walk through Kreuzberg's murals, squats and backyard studios, often including a spray-paint workshop, explains the subculture that shaped the city after reunification. It is the best way to read the layers of graffiti you would otherwise walk straight past.

      Kreuzberg (SO36)~€25 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

      A real Berlin club night

Eat late, nap if you can, and head out after 1am; Berghain is legendary but the door is unpredictable, so have Sisyphos, Kater Blau or ://about blank as backup. Dress dark and low-key, arrive in a pair speaking quietly, carry cash for entry (around 20-30 EUR) and expect no photos inside.

      Friedrichshain and Rummelsburg~€45 pp

Travel essentials

Stay connected. Stay covered.

Germany eSIM

An eSIM avoids roaming charges and keeps Google Maps, the BVG app for live train times and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt or Uber working, which is especially useful for getting home after late-night club sessions when the U-Bahn runs a reduced night service.

  • ✓ Recommended: ~5 GB for 3 days
  • ✓ Install before you fly, activate on landing
  • ✓ Keep your number for WhatsApp & 2FA
Get eSIM with Airalo

Travel insurance

German healthcare is excellent but expensive for non-EU visitors without cover, and late nights in crowded clubs and on transport raise the risk of lost phones and pickpocketing. Insurance also protects against disruption at BER, where strikes and delays are fairly common.

  • ✓ Emergency medical & evacuation
  • ✓ Trip interruption, delays & lost luggage
  • ✓ Buy online in minutes, even after departure

Smart saving

Buy the 3-day Museum Pass Berlin (about 32 EUR each) if you plan to visit three or more state museums, since individual entries on Museum Island alone cost 12-14 EUR each.

Good to know

Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Local know-how

Practical tips

transport

Buy an ABC ticket for the airport

BER airport sits in fare zone C, so get a 72-hour ABC ticket from a BVG machine or the BVG app to cover your arrival, departure and city travel. Paper tickets must be stamped in the red or yellow validator before your first ride, and plain-clothes inspectors fine 60 EUR on the spot.

money

Carry some cash

Cards are much more widely accepted than a few years ago, but many Kneipen (traditional pubs), Spaetis, doener stands and some club doors are still cash only. Keep 40-60 EUR on you and use bank ATMs rather than standalone Euronet machines, which charge high fees.

culture

Tipping and the bottle deposit

Round up or add 5-10 percent in restaurants by telling the server the total you want to pay rather than leaving cash on the table. Most bottles carry a Pfand deposit of 8-25 cents, which you can return at any supermarket machine.

booking

Book the Reichstag dome early

Visits to the Reichstag glass dome are free but require advance registration on the Bundestag website, and slots often fill several days ahead. Museum Island venues such as the Neues Museum also use timed tickets, so reserve online in high season.

culture

Know the club door rules

At Berghain, Sisyphos or Tresor, arrive in small groups, dress down in dark casual clothing, stay quiet in the queue and know who is playing. Photos are banned inside most clubs and stickers are put over phone cameras; Saturday night often runs well into Sunday afternoon.

weather

Best time to go

May to September is the best season, with long days, 20-28 C temperatures and open-air beer gardens and canal bars. Winters are grey and around 0-5 C, though December's Christmas markets at Gendarmenmarkt and Charlottenburg Palace are a highlight.

safety

Watch your bags in busy spots

Berlin is generally safe, but pickpockets work Alexanderplatz, Warschauer Strasse, the U8 line and crowded S-Bahn trains. Ignore clipboard petitioners near the Brandenburg Gate, a common distraction scam.

culture

Plan around Sundays and Mondays

Almost all shops and supermarkets close on Sundays, so stock up on Saturday or use station shops and Spaetis. Many museums close on Mondays, so put Museum Island visits on other days.

Pack this

  • Comfortable walking shoes for long days on cobblestones
  • Light rain jacket and layers, as weather changes quickly
  • Dark, casual outfit for techno clubs (no flashy or formal wear)
  • Type C/F plug adapter
  • Small crossbody bag with a zip for crowded trains and clubs
  • Reusable water bottle, since tap water is excellent
  • Earplugs for clubs and lively neighbourhoods
