Best time to visit Berlin
May to June and September, with December a festive bonus
Berlin is at its best from May to September, when beer gardens, lakes and open-air cinemas fill up and the city lives outdoors. Winter is grey, dark and cold, but it is cheap, uncrowded and ideal for museums, clubs and Christmas markets. Spring and early autumn offer the best balance of mild weather, fair prices and a packed cultural calendar.

Timing tips for Berlin
- Book hotels two to three months ahead for the Berlinale, ITB, IFA, the Berlin Marathon and New Year's Eve, when prices can double and rooms sell out.
- Most shops and supermarkets close on Sundays, so plan groceries ahead and use the day for museums, flea markets like Mauerpark and lakeside walks.
- Summer weather swings between heatwaves and sudden thunderstorms; few older buildings or hotels have air conditioning, so ask before booking in July or August.
