4 days in Singapore

Hawker feasts, rainforest canopies and Orchard Road in four days

This plan balances Singapore's three great pleasures: eating at legendary hawker centres, walking through surprisingly wild rainforest and gardens, and shopping everything from Orchard Road malls to Haji Lane boutiques. Each day stays in one or two neighbouring districts, so you spend your time eating and exploring rather than commuting. The pace suits a couple who want full days with air-conditioned breaks built in.

Weather

Singapore is hot and humid all year, around 25-32C, with short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms common, especially during the November to January northeast monsoon. February to April is generally the driest and most comfortable period, so pack light clothing, a compact umbrella and a layer for icy air-conditioning.

Arriving

From Changi Airport, the MRT (East-West Line, change at Tanah Merah) reaches the city centre in about 40-50 minutes for roughly 2 USD per person; tap any contactless Visa or Mastercard at the gates. A Grab or taxi takes 20-30 minutes and costs about 20-30 USD, plus airport and peak surcharges. Before leaving, walk to Jewel Changi to see the HSBC Rain Vortex indoor waterfall, which is free and landside.

Money & power

Singapore Dollar (SGD). Plugs: Type G (three square pins, UK-style), 230V 50Hz.

Day by day

Your itinerary

Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

  1. Day1

    Gardens, Light and Satay

    Marina Bay

    1. Morning

Settle in and visit Jewel Changi's Rain Vortex

If you land in the morning, take an hour at Jewel before heading into the city. The 40-metre indoor waterfall is spectacular, and the Shiseido Forest Valley trails around it ease you gently into jet-lagged sightseeing. Drop your bags at the hotel afterwards.

      Jewel Changi AirportFree
    2. Afternoon

Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay

These two cooled conservatories are an ideal refuge from the afternoon heat. The Cloud Forest has a 35-metre misty mountain with a mountaintop walkway, while the Flower Dome shows changing seasonal displays. Go after 3pm, when crowds start to thin.

Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay~$42 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Garden Rhapsody light show and Satay by the Bay

Stay for the free Garden Rhapsody show beneath the Supertrees at 7:45pm or 8:45pm; lying on the ground gives the best view. Then walk five minutes to Satay by the Bay for smoky skewers. If you still have energy, finish with the free Spectra light show at Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza.

Supertree Grove and Satay by the Bay~$15 pp
  2. Day2

    Chinatown Hawkers and Heritage Shophouses

Chinatown, Tiong Bahru and Clarke Quay

    1. Morning

Breakfast and indie shops in Tiong Bahru

Start at Tiong Bahru Market for local breakfast, then wander the 1930s Art Deco estate. Stop at Tiong Bahru Bakery for a croissant and browse the independent bookshop Woods in the Books. The area is quiet and photogenic before 10am.

      Tiong Bahru~$12 pp
    2. Afternoon

Chinatown temples and a guided hawker food walk

Visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, where modest dress is required, and the Sri Mariamman Temple on South Bridge Road. Then join a guided food tour through Chinatown Complex and Maxwell Food Centre, where a local guide orders the best stalls and explains each dish. It is the fastest way to understand hawker culture.

      Chinatown~$75 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Riverside drinks at Boat Quay and Clarke Quay

Walk along the Singapore River from Boat Quay to Clarke Quay as the shophouses light up. A 40-minute bumboat river cruise gives a breezy view of the skyline after dark. Order a drink at one of the quieter Boat Quay terraces rather than the louder Clarke Quay clubs.

Boat Quay and Clarke Quay~$25 pp Get tickets
  3. Day3

    Rainforest Trails and Treetop Bridges

MacRitchie, Bukit Timah and Dempsey Hill

    1. Morning

      MacRitchie TreeTop Walk loop

Start by 7:30am to hike roughly 11 km through primary rainforest to the 250-metre suspension bridge over the canopy, watching for long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards. The bridge is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Bring at least a litre of water each and keep food out of sight from the monkeys.

      MacRitchie Reservoir ParkFree
    2. Afternoon

Singapore Botanic Gardens and National Orchid Garden

Recover with lunch, then walk through the UNESCO-listed Botanic Gardens. Swan Lake and the Rainforest section are free, and the National Orchid Garden displays more than 1,000 orchid species. The cooled Orchid House offers a welcome break from the humidity.

      Singapore Botanic Gardens, Tanglin~$11 pp
    3. Evening

Dinner in the jungle at Dempsey Hill

Dempsey Hill is a cluster of former colonial army barracks surrounded by greenery, now filled with restaurants and wine bars. Book a table at PS.Cafe Harding or Candlenut, a Michelin-starred restaurant serving Peranakan food. It is a 10-minute taxi ride from the Botanic Gardens.

      Dempsey Hill~$70 pp
  4. Day4

    Orchard Malls and Kampong Glam

    Orchard Road and Kampong Glam

    1. Morning

      Shopping along Orchard Road

The malls open at 10 or 11am. Head to ION Orchard for global brands, Takashimaya for Kinokuniya bookstore, and Mandarin Gallery and Tangs for local labels and souvenirs such as kaya and TWG tea. Tourists can claim GST refunds on purchases over about 75 USD at the airport using eTRS.

      Orchard RoadFree
    2. Afternoon

Haji Lane boutiques and Sultan Mosque

Browse the murals and indie boutiques on Haji Lane and Arab Street, known for perfume oils, batik and handwoven textiles. Visit the golden-domed Sultan Mosque, which is free and lends robes at the entrance, but closes to visitors during Friday prayers. Stop for teh tarik on Bussorah Street.

      Kampong Glam~$10 pp
    3. Evening

      Farewell feast and chilli crab

End the trip with Singapore's signature dish. Order chilli crab with fried mantou buns for mopping up the sauce, then take an easy stroll before heading to the airport or packing for departure.

Travel essentials

Stay connected. Stay covered.

Singapore eSIM

A 10GB eSIM covers 4 days of Google Maps, Grab rides, restaurant searches and photo uploads without roaming fees. Data is essential for checking MRT routes, booking Grab in sudden downpours and scanning QR menus at hawker centres.

  • ✓ Recommended: ~10 GB for 4 days
  • ✓ Install before you fly, activate on landing
  • ✓ Keep your number for WhatsApp & 2FA
Get eSIM with Airalo

Travel insurance

Singapore's healthcare is excellent but expensive for visitors, so medical cover matters if heat exhaustion, dehydration or a slip on wet trails needs treatment. Cover for flight delays and cancellations is useful, as Changi is a major hub and storms can disrupt schedules, and gadget or valuables cover helps if you are carrying new shopping purchases home.

  • ✓ Emergency medical & evacuation
  • ✓ Trip interruption, delays & lost luggage
  • ✓ Buy online in minutes, before you fly

Good to know

Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Local know-how

Practical tips

weather

Hot, humid and rainy year-round

Expect 25-32C and high humidity every month, with short heavy downpours, often in the afternoon. February to April is usually driest and most comfortable; November to January brings the wetter northeast monsoon, and haze can occasionally drift in between August and October.

transport

Just tap your own card on the MRT

Visa or Mastercard contactless cards and phone wallets work directly on MRT and buses via SimplyGo, so there is no need to buy a tourist pass. Use Grab or the official taxi queue for late nights and airport runs.

booking

Book the Night Safari and Gardens ahead

Night Safari time slots sell out on weekends and holidays, so book a few days ahead online. Buy Gardens by the Bay dome tickets in advance and visit the free Supertree Grove light show at 7:45pm or 8:45pm.

culture

Hawker centre etiquette

A packet of tissues on a table means it is reserved ('choped'), so find another seat. Return trays to the tray-return stations, as leaving them can incur a fine.

money

Understand the 'plus plus' and skip tipping

Restaurant prices marked '++' add a 10% service charge plus 9% GST to the bill. Tipping is not expected anywhere, and hawker stalls are increasingly card and QR friendly but carry some cash just in case.

money

Claim your GST refund on shopping

Spend over S$100 at a single participating store (including on the same day across receipts) and ask for the eTRS tax refund. Claim it at the Changi kiosks before check-in to recover most of the 9% GST.

safety

Respect the strict rules

Eating and drinking on the MRT, smoking outside marked zones, jaywalking and littering all carry fines, and chewing gum cannot be brought in for sale. Singapore is very safe, but keep an eye on bags in packed malls.

booking

Submit the SG Arrival Card

Complete the free SG Arrival Card on the official ICA website or MyICA app within 3 days before arrival. Ignore third-party sites that charge a fee for it.

Pack this

  • Lightweight, breathable cotton or linen clothing
  • Compact umbrella that doubles as sun shade
  • Light cardigan or layer for icy air-conditioned malls, cinemas and the MRT
  • Insect repellent for the Night Safari and nature trails like MacRitchie or Southern Ridges
  • Comfortable walking sandals or shoes with good grip for wet pavements
  • Type G plug adapter
  • Reusable water bottle, since tap water is safe to drink
