Fog-kissed hills, mission burritos and redwoods just across the bridge
Three geographically tight days: the waterfront, Alcatraz and North Beach first, then Golden Gate Park and a bridge walk, and finally the Mission and a redwood escape to Muir Woods. It balances world-class food, deep cultural history and genuinely wild nature, all at a relaxed mid-range pace for two.

Weather
San Francisco is mild year-round at roughly 55-70F (13-21C), with foggy, cool summers (June-August) and brisk evenings, so pack layers whatever the month. The best season is September to October, when the fog lifts and the city has its warmest, clearest days.
Arriving
From SFO, BART runs directly to Powell or Embarcadero stations downtown in about 30 minutes for around $10.70 per person; pay by tapping a contactless card or Clipper on your phone. A taxi or Uber/Lyft takes 25-45 minutes and costs $45-70 plus tip. From Oakland (OAK), take the BART connector to downtown in about 35 minutes for roughly $11.
Money & power
US Dollar (USD). Plugs: Type A and B, 120V, 60Hz (most visitors from Europe, the UK and Australia need an adapter).

Embarcadero, Alcatraz, North Beach, Telegraph Hill
Morning
Ferry Building Marketplace breakfast
Start at the 1898 Ferry Building with Blue Bottle coffee and a pastry, browsing artisan stalls like Cowgirl Creamery and Heirloom Mushrooms. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings the outdoor farmers market wraps the building, and Saturday is the best of all. Easy and gentle for a jet-lagged first morning.
Afternoon
Alcatraz Island cellhouse tour
Take the official Alcatraz City Cruises ferry from Pier 33 and do the excellent audio tour narrated by former guards and inmates. Allow 2.5-3 hours, and book weeks ahead because it sells out. Sit on the right side of the ferry for skyline and Golden Gate views.
Evening
Coit Tower sunset and North Beach stroll
Climb the Filbert Steps through hidden cottage gardens, where you may spot the wild parrots, up to Coit Tower for its WPA murals and city views. Then wander down to City Lights Bookstore and have a drink at Vesuvio Cafe, the Beat Generation haunt across Jack Kerouac Alley.
Golden Gate Park, Outer Richmond, Presidio
Morning
de Young Museum and Japanese Tea Garden
Arrive at the Japanese Tea Garden just after 9am, before the crowds, for koi ponds, the drum bridge and green tea. Then head to the de Young for American art and its free Hamon Observation Tower, which has panoramic park views. The de Young is closed on Mondays, so swap this for Day 3 if needed.
Afternoon
Lands End Trail to Sutro Baths
Follow the 3.4-mile coastal Lands End Trail from the Sutro Baths ruins, past cypress groves, Mile Rock Beach and the Labyrinth, with the Golden Gate Bridge framed through the trees. Stop at the Lands End Lookout visitor center for maps. Wear layers, because wind off the Pacific is constant.
Evening
Golden Gate Bridge walk at golden hour
Start at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center and walk to the first tower and back, about an hour, for the classic view, then descend to Fort Point or Crissy Field as the light turns gold. Fog often rolls in dramatically around sunset in summer.
Muir Woods, Mission District
Morning
Muir Woods redwood forest
Walk among old-growth coast redwoods up to 250 feet tall on the Main Trail and the quieter Hillside Trail loop. Personal vehicles need a parking reservation and shuttle riders need a booked ticket, so a guided half-day tour from the city is the easiest option. Many tours add a Sausalito stop.
Afternoon
Mission murals on Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley
Wander Balmy Alley's Central American-themed murals and the protest art of Clarion Alley, then see the Women's Building's giant MaestraPeace mural on 18th Street. Finish with Bi-Rite Creamery salted caramel ice cream.
Evening
Dolores Park sunset and Valencia Street dinner
Grab a spot on the upper southwest slope of Mission Dolores Park for skyline views as the sun drops, and peek at Mission Dolores, the city's oldest building. Then walk to Valencia Street for dinner and a cocktail at Zeitgeist or Trick Dog.

Book ahead
Skip-the-line tickets and tours that genuinely improve the trip — the ones that sell out are flagged.
The official ferry and award-winning audio tour of America's most notorious prison. Day slots sell out weeks ahead, and the night tour is even rarer.
Round-trip transport that skips Muir Woods parking reservations, plus time among giant redwoods and a stop in waterfront Sausalito.
Taste focaccia, cannoli, espresso and cioppino at family-run institutions while a guide shares the Italian and Beat history of the neighbourhood.
Sail under the Golden Gate Bridge and past Alcatraz at golden hour on a small sailboat, a far more atmospheric option than the big ferries.
Discover the stories behind Balmy Alley's murals while tasting pupusas, tacos and Mission-style burritos with a local guide.
Planning several sights?
One Go City pass covers many of San Francisco's top attractions and tours. If you're visiting three or more paid sights, it often costs less than buying tickets one by one.
Travel essentials
International roaming in the US is expensive, and you will rely on data for Google Maps, the MuniMobile and Clipper apps, real-time Muni arrivals, Uber or Lyft, and restaurant reservations. A 5GB eSIM for a week covers three busy days with room to spare.
US healthcare is among the most expensive in the world; an emergency room visit can easily exceed $3,000, so medical cover is essential. Policies with theft cover are also worthwhile given frequent car break-ins and phone snatching in tourist areas, and fog regularly delays flights at SFO, so check cover for missed connections and delays.

Smart saving
Buy the 3-day Muni Visitor Passport on the MuniMobile app instead of paying $9 per cable car ride; two cable car trips a day already cover its cost, and buses, streetcars and the F-line are included.
Good to know
Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.
Local know-how
Book Alcatraz early
Official Alcatraz City Cruises tickets from Pier 33 often sell out two to four weeks ahead, especially the night tour. If they are gone, a tour bundle on GetYourGuide or Viator is the usual fallback.
Use Clipper in your phone wallet
Add a Clipper card to Apple or Google Wallet for BART, Muni buses, streetcars and ferries, and buy the Muni Visitor Passport in the MuniMobile app for unlimited cable car rides. BART from SFO to Powell Street takes about 30 minutes.
Never leave anything in a car
Car break-ins are extremely common, especially at Twin Peaks, Lombard Street, Alamo Square and Golden Gate Bridge lots. Keep bags out of sight, or better, take tours and transit instead of renting a car.
Know which blocks to skip
The Tenderloin, between Union Square and Civic Center, and parts of SoMa near 6th Street can feel rough, especially at night. Walk around them via Powell, Market east of 5th, or take a short ride-hail.
Dress for microclimates and pick autumn
Summer is often foggy and 15-18C at the coast while the Mission is sunny and warmer, so layer up every day. September and October are the best season, with the warmest, clearest days of the year; winter brings mild rain at around 10-15C.
Tipping and surprise surcharges
Tip 18-20% at sit-down restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. Menu prices exclude roughly 8.6% sales tax, and many restaurants add a 4-6% health-mandate surcharge, so read the bottom of the menu.
Reserve Muir Woods in advance
Independent visitors must pre-book either a parking or shuttle reservation online before arriving. A guided tour from the city avoids both, and most also stop in Sausalito.
Book dinner reservations on Resy and OpenTable
Popular spots such as Zuni Cafe, State Bird Provisions and Tony's Pizza Napoletana fill up on weekends. Book a week or two ahead, or arrive right at opening for walk-in seats.
