3 days in Copenhagen

Pastries, design shops and harbour light in Denmark's tastiest capital

Three compact days that pair Copenhagen's big cultural hitters with its best eating and design shopping, grouped by neighbourhood so you walk or cycle rather than commute. You'll move from the royal centre and Nyhavn to Christianshavn's canals and Refshaleøen's food scene, then finish in Vesterbro and Nørrebro, where the city's independent shops and natural-wine bars live. It suits a couple who want great meals, beautiful design and culture without a rushed checklist.

Weather

Summers (June to August) are mild at 18-23°C with very long daylight, making it the best season, while May and September are quieter and still pleasant. Winters are dark and damp at 0-4°C but brightened by Christmas markets and Tivoli's winter season, and rain showers are possible year-round, so pack a light waterproof.

Arriving

From Copenhagen Airport (CPH) the M2 metro runs every 4-20 minutes, 24/7, and reaches Kongens Nytorv in about 15 minutes for roughly 4.50 EUR per person (a 3-zone ticket in the DOT app). Regional trains reach Copenhagen Central Station in 13 minutes for the same fare. A taxi to the centre takes 20-25 minutes and costs about 35-45 EUR.

Money & power

Danish krone (DKK), roughly 7.46 DKK to 1 EUR. Plugs: Type C, E, F and K (Danish), 230V 50Hz; standard two-pin European plugs fit.

Day by day

Your itinerary

Each day is grouped by neighbourhood so you spend time exploring, not commuting.

  1. Day1

    Royal Copenhagen and Nyhavn

    Indre By, Frederiksstaden, Nyhavn

    1. Morning

Rosenborg Castle and the Crown Jewels

Start gently after arrival at this 17th-century Renaissance castle, where the basement treasury holds the Danish crown jewels. Arrive at opening to have the Knights' Hall to yourselves, then stroll through the King's Garden next door.

Øster Voldgade 4A, Indre By~€20 pp Get tickets
    2. Afternoon

Amalienborg, Marble Church and Strøget design shopping

Walk to Frederik's Church for its huge dome, then into Amalienborg's octagonal square for the noon changing of the guard. Head back via Strøget and Kronprinsensgade for Illums Bolighus, Hay House and Royal Copenhagen's flagship at Amagertorv.

      Frederiksstaden and StrøgetFree
    3. Evening

Canal tour and dinner near Nyhavn

Take a one-hour canal cruise from Nyhavn in early evening light, gliding past the Opera House and the Little Mermaid. Afterwards, skip the touristy quayside terraces and eat on the quieter side streets.

      Nyhavn~€15 pp Get tickets
  2. Day2

    Christianshavn Canals to Refshaleøen

    Christianshavn, Holmen, Refshaleøen

    1. Morning

Church of Our Saviour spire climb

Climb the 400 steps of the corkscrew spire, the last 150 on the outside, for the best panorama in the city. Go at opening to avoid queues and wind, and note it closes in heavy rain or storms.

Sankt Annæ Gade 29, Christianshavn~€10 pp
    2. Afternoon

Christiania wander and harbour bus to Refshaleøen

Walk through Freetown Christiania's lakeside paths and colourful homes, but keep cameras away on Pusher Street. Then catch the harbour bus to Refshaleøen to explore the old shipyard's art spaces and Copenhagen Contemporary.

      Christiania and Refshaleøen~€12 pp
    3. Evening

Street food and sunset at Reffen

Reffen is the city's biggest street-food market, with dozens of stalls in containers on the waterfront. Grab a drink on the deckchairs by the water; it is open roughly April to September, so in winter book Alouette or Hija de Sanchez instead.

      Refshalevej 167, Refshaleøen~€25 pp
  3. Day3

    Markets, Meatpacking and Nørrebro

    Nørreport, Vesterbro, Nørrebro

    1. Morning

      Torvehallerne food halls

Graze through Copenhagen's glass market halls, with over 60 stalls selling Danish cheese, smørrebrød, coffee and pastries. Arrive by 10am for the best choice and a seat.

      Frederiksborggade 21, Nørreport~€20 pp
    2. Afternoon

      Design Museum and Nørrebro shopping

See the Design Museum Denmark's chair collection, then cross to Jægersborggade's tiny independent ceramic studios, coffee bars and vintage shops. Finish with a wander through Assistens Cemetery, where Hans Christian Andersen is buried.

Bredgade and Nørrebro~€20 pp Get tickets
    3. Evening

Dinner and natural wine in the Meatpacking District

Kødbyen's former slaughterhouses now house some of the city's liveliest restaurants and bars. Book dinner ahead, then have a final glass at a wine bar nearby on Istedgade.

      Kødbyen, Vesterbro~€60 pp

Travel essentials

Stay connected. Stay covered.

Denmark eSIM

Denmark is in the EU, but non-EU roaming can be expensive. A 5GB eSIM easily covers three days of maps, the DOT ticket app, restaurant bookings and bike-share apps like Donkey Republic.

  • ✓ Recommended: ~5 GB for 3 days
  • ✓ Install before you fly, activate on landing
  • ✓ Keep your number for WhatsApp & 2FA
Get eSIM with Airalo

Travel insurance

Healthcare in Denmark is excellent but costly for non-EU visitors without cover, and cycling is a real accident risk if you rent bikes. Insurance also protects against pickpocketing in busy shopping streets and flight disruption at Copenhagen Airport, a major hub prone to weather and strike delays.

  • ✓ Emergency medical & evacuation
  • ✓ Trip interruption, delays & lost luggage
  • ✓ Buy online in minutes, before you fly

Smart saving

Make lunch your main restaurant meal: many Copenhagen kitchens offer lunch smørrebrød or set menus at half the dinner price, and Reffen or Torvehallerne cover dinner cheaply.

Good to know

Estimates exclude flights. Hotel prices move with demand — booking 4–8 weeks ahead usually gets the best rates in central areas.

Local know-how

Practical tips

transport

Buy the City Pass Small

A 72-hour City Pass Small covers metro, buses and trains in zones 1-4, including the airport, for about 27 EUR per person. Buy it in the DOT Tickets app and activate before boarding, as inspectors fine heavily.

money

Cards everywhere, cash rarely

Almost every shop, café and market stall takes contactless cards, and some are card-only. Skip airport currency exchanges; you can do the whole trip without cash.

culture

Tipping is optional

Service is included in Danish prices and staff are well paid, so tipping is not expected. Rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent for excellent service is a kind gesture, not an obligation.

safety

Respect the bike lanes

Copenhagen's bike lanes are fast and busy, and walking in them is the most common tourist mistake. If you rent a bike, signal with your hand before stopping or turning and keep right.

booking

Reserve popular tables early

Well-known spots like Barr, Hija de Sanchez's sit-down venues or Restaurant Schønnemann for smørrebrød fill up days ahead, especially Friday and Saturday. Book online one to two weeks out.

culture

Check Monday closures and Sunday hours

Several museums, including the Design Museum and the National Gallery (SMK), close on Mondays. Many independent shops close early on Saturday and stay shut on Sunday, so plan shopping for weekdays.

safety

Christiania rules and pickpockets

In Freetown Christiania, do not take photos on Pusher Street and do not run. Watch bags at Nyhavn, Strøget and Central Station, where pickpockets target distracted visitors.

weather

Best season and typical weather

May to September is the sweet spot, with long daylight and 18 to 23 C highs, plus Tivoli and outdoor food markets in full swing. Winters are dark and around 0 to 4 C, though December brings Tivoli's Christmas market.

Pack this

  • Windproof, waterproof jacket for sudden showers and harbour breezes
  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobbles and long days on foot
  • Layers such as a light knit, since evenings cool off even in summer
  • Compact umbrella that can handle wind
  • Swimwear for a summer dip at Islands Brygge harbour bath
  • Foldable tote bag, as shops charge for bags
  • Contactless card with no foreign transaction fees
