Best time to visit Istanbul
Mid-April to early June and September to October
Istanbul is at its finest in spring and autumn, when mild sunshine suits long walks between mosques, bazaars and Bosphorus ferries, though these are also the busiest and priciest months. Summer is hot, humid and crowded but lively, with rooftop bars, open-air concerts and swimming on the Princes' Islands. Winter is grey, damp and sometimes snowy, yet it brings the lowest prices, short queues and the city at its most local.

Timing tips for Istanbul
- Book hotels two to three months ahead for April, May, September and October, and earlier for Easter and the Tulip Festival period.
- Check the dates of Ramadan and the two Bayram holidays, which shift each year: sights stay open but transport and coastal getaways get very busy during the Bayrams.
- In summer, visit Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the Grand Bazaar at opening time; note the Grand Bazaar closes on Sundays and Topkapı Palace closes on Tuesdays.
