Best time to visit Venice
Late April to May and September to October
Venice is at its best in spring and early autumn, when days are warm enough for long walks and canal-side dinners but the summer crush and humidity have not set in. July and August are hot, sticky and packed with day-trippers, while November to January brings fog, acqua alta flooding and low prices, a moody, atmospheric Venice that rewards patient travellers. Carnival in February is magical but expensive and crowded.

Timing tips for Venice
- For Carnival, Redentore, the Regata Storica and Film Festival weeks, book hotels four to six months ahead; prices can double and central rooms sell out.
- From October to January check the acqua alta tide forecast; the MOSE barriers usually hold back major floods, but pack waterproof boots and expect raised walkways near St Mark's.
- Day visitors must pay the access fee on designated busy days, mostly spring and summer weekends; staying overnight exempts you, and early mornings and evenings are when Venice feels most magical.
