Best time to visit Tokyo
Late March to May and October to late November
Spring and autumn are Tokyo at its best: mild, mostly dry days, cherry blossoms in late March and early April, and fiery maples in late November, though hotels fill and prices climb. Winter is cold but crisp, sunny and good value, while June brings the rainy season and July to September are hot, sticky and exposed to typhoons. The city never closes, so every month works if you plan around the weather.

Timing tips for Tokyo
- For cherry blossom or late November leaf season, book hotels three to six months ahead; blossom dates shift by up to two weeks, so allow a flexible buffer.
- Avoid Golden Week (29 April to 5 May), Obon in mid-August and New Year week, when Japanese travel en masse, trains sell out and many shops and restaurants close around 1 January.
- In summer, plan outdoor sights for early morning, retreat to museums and department stores at midday, and carry an umbrella from June to October for rainy-season showers and typhoons.
