Best time to visit Rome
Mid-April to early June and late September to October
Spring and autumn give Rome its golden light, warm days and long evenings outdoors, but they also bring the biggest crowds and highest hotel rates. Summer is genuinely hot and sticky, and many locals leave in August, while winter is mild, quieter and cheaper, with the city's rainiest spell falling from October to December.

Timing tips for Rome
- Book Vatican Museums and Colosseum timed tickets at least two to four weeks ahead in spring and autumn, and two to three months ahead for Easter week.
- Most state museums close on Mondays and the Vatican Museums close on Sundays except the free last Sunday of the month, which is extremely crowded.
- In summer, sightsee from opening time until about 1pm, retreat indoors through the afternoon heat, and head back out after 6pm when the city comes alive.
