Best time to visit Naples
April to early June and mid-September to October
Naples is at its best in spring and early autumn, when it is warm enough for Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri day trips but not punishing. July and August bring sticky heat, island crowds and an August exodus of locals, with some shops and trattorias closing. Winter is mild but often wet, yet it is cheap, local and wonderful for pizza, museums and the Christmas nativity workshops.

Timing tips for Naples
- Book Easter, May and September stays two to three months ahead, and Capri or Amalfi Coast rooms even earlier.
- In summer, visit Pompeii and Herculaneum at opening time, carry water, and save the afternoon for a siesta or a swim.
- Many state museums and archaeological sites are free on the first Sunday of the month, so expect long queues then; reserve tickets for the Sansevero Chapel well in advance.
