Best time to visit Florence
Late April to early June and September to mid-October
Florence is at its best in late spring and early autumn, when days are warm, the hills are green or golden and the light on the Arno is glorious, though you will share it with plenty of others. July and August are hot, humid and packed, with many locals leaving around Ferragosto. Winter is cool, damp and often grey, but it brings short queues, lower prices and the city's masterpieces almost to yourself.

- Book timed-entry tickets for the Uffizi, Accademia and Duomo climb several weeks ahead from April to October; slots sell out fast.
- Most state museums, including the Uffizi and Accademia, close on Mondays, and free first-Sunday entry means very long queues, so plan around both.
- In summer, sightsee from opening time until early afternoon, retreat for a long lunch or rest, then head out again for sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo.
