Best time to visit Athens
Mid-April to early June and mid-September to October
Spring and autumn give Athens its best balance: warm sunshine, walkable temperatures for the Acropolis and ancient sites, and evenings made for rooftop dinners. July and August bring fierce heat, cruise crowds and peak prices, though the city's outdoor cinemas and summer festival are at their best. Winter is mild, quieter and cheap, with some rainy days but plenty of sunshine for museum-heavy trips.

Timing tips for Athens
- Book Orthodox Easter and September stays two to three months ahead; the date of Easter moves each year, so check it before planning a spring trip.
- In summer, reach the Acropolis at the 8am opening or come for the last hours of the day, and buy timed tickets online; heatwaves can close sites at midday.
- From November to March, major archaeological sites offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month, and many shops and sites shut or shorten hours on 15 August and Easter weekend.
